Meet our Network Group Leader:

Dewayne was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome in May of 2001.  He has had a total of three surgical interventions. Dewayne and his wife Toya have been married for 5 years.  They met prior to his first surgery and Toya was his support system during his prolonged hospital stay and recovery period.  They have a son Tyren who is two years old.  Toya is employed as a personal banker and Dewayne is a stay at home dad and helps raise Tyren. 

Dewayne's original surgery was in Memphis where the physicians were not well-educated in Marfan patients.  He chose to move to St.Louis so that he can be near medical specialists that are much more educated in the care and treatment of Marfan Syndrome.  In St.Louis he has learned that he can live a normal and happy life.

Description of Group

The St.Louis Metro Area Chapter of the NMF meets on a regular basis to learn about Marfan Syndrome by having physicians and specialists as guest speakers.  The group also serves as a support system for both affeted persons, their families and loved ones.  The group consists of children and adults.

Chapter meetings typically include socializing, sharing of food, Chapter business and planning, as well as speakers who discuss topics that are important to our members.

Our chapter also plans field trips to the Zoo, Grant's Farm, picnics, Shakespeare Festival, concerts and pool party.

Fundraising at local events, such as the musical RENT, craft fairs, chocolate and jewelry sales, mall promotions and armband campaigns have allowed to continue our mission to educate the community and support the National Foundation in its research and education goals.

Members of our chapter also assisted in planning and facilitating the National Conference in 2005.
