NMF NATIONAL VOLUNTEER NETWORK VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Pediatric Sports Initiative


Reports to: Jonathan Martin, Director of Programs

Time Commitment/Frequency: 
Varies.

Location: Local community. Telephone work and possible in person meetings with local school personnel.

Goals and Objectives of this job

  • Disseminate posters and brochures to coaches/athletic directors/school nurses
  • Identify local school district policies regarding pre-participation athlete screening
  • Possibly secure slot on school board meeting as concerned parent/community member regarding pre-participation screening policies

  • Advocacy
  • Telephone/internet research
  • Possibly in-person meetings with school personnel.

Volunteer skills/attributes:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Personal connection or contact at school helpful
  • Understanding of Marfan syndrome (MFS) and physical activity guidelines


Benefits to volunteer:

  •  Preserve safety of children with MFS
  •  May help identify young people with MFS that have not been diagnosed
  •  Raise awareness of school board policies and procedures and advocate for Marfan community

Job responsibilities and tasks:

  • Identify local school districts, middle and high schools
  • Identify appropriate contact (athletic director, school nurse, etc)
  • Initiate contact, promote NMF resources, including posters and brochures
  • Obtain complete mailing address and permission to send additional materials if necessary
  • Research school/district policy on pre-participation screening—obtain copy of medical exam/release forms if possible
  • Follow up with athletic director if necessary
  • Take necessary steps to address school board as necessary

Special training required: 

  • Coaching with Director of Programs or Volunteer Coordinator before commencing local contacts
  • Must have good understanding of issues surrounding physical activity guidelines and Marfan syndrome
  • Know who to approach

Related policies/evaluation:

  • Must be well-spoken volunteer since they will be representing the NMF.
  • Evaluation:
    • Successful outreach will result in placement of materials in schools.
    • Various districts policies/forms collected on behalf of NMF shows success in making contacts with districts
    • Track success in changing policies at local/state level

 

The NMF office will distribute surveys or evaluation forms at appropriate times.  It is part of the volunteer commitment to return these forms as requested.
